Snapper
February 2007
Hi! My name is Snapper and I was rescued by the LCHS when I was only three days old, and bottle fed by my foster mom until I could eat on my own. When I was 12 weeks old I was adopted by a sad family whose last kitty ran out the door into the path of an on-coming car. I was just what they needed to heal their broken hearts. I’m about 19 months old now, weigh 16 pounds, and my favorite pastime isn’t sleeping, as you might think, but playing “fetch” with my stuffed kitty. As long as someone will throw it for me, I’ll run get it and bring it back.
Zeus
December 2006
Hi there! My name is Zeus and I am a silky terrier (mostly). When I came to the Leon County Humane Society last March I was looking for someone to rescue and LCHS Program Director Melissa Abernathy had just the person in mind. First she sent me to the vet for tooth care and eye care and some other stuff and found me a really cool foster home. Then she emailed my picture to a widow who needed to be rescued. She needed someone to love, to take care of, to take out on walks so she could smile and meet new people...and she fell in love with me! She travels a lot and pulls her house behind her! We have been to North and South Carolina. Then across the country to Seattle, Washington and back to Monticello, FL for the winter. We went different routes so I have really seen a lot of the country and have rescued her from some of her saddness. I am truely a rescue dog! Thank you Melissa for linking us up...we are a perfect match! May all of you have a Merry Christmas and may all the pets who read this find someone to rescue....you know people think they are rescuing us but we know the truth! Zeus
MOTEL PUPPIES - 9 ABANDONED PUPPIES
November 2006
Emmy, Ritz, Holly, Merri, Hampton, Peabody, Maddie, Farra
On September 9, 2006 nine puppies were abandoned in a local motel room. It was two days before they were found and brought into the capable hands of our loving foster parents Jodi Sperry, Maggie Baker, Sarah Ellis, and Cecilia Loeb. Without their mom and barely two weeks old, these little guys needed to be fed around the clock! In mid November, when the puppies were old enough, they were adopted, just in time to enjoy their first Thanksgiving with their forever families!
Sumana and Amaiya
November 2006
Hello, we are twin sisters, one-year-old netherlands dwarf rabbits, Sumana and Amaiya, who were adopted at the end of August. We are very happy, spoiled bunnies! Our adoptive mommy loves us so much that she even grows fresh herbs in her garden for us. She threw us a birthday party, too! The human guests got carrot cake. We got lots of petting and some extra fresh herbs, and we were visited by our former foster mother, Sherry, who had given us a wonderful home until we got our forever home. We are very sweet bunnies. Amaiya, the gray one, loves to give bunny kisses. She also stands up on her hind legs and begs for treats like small pieces of banana. Sumana may be the biggest, but she's a bit of a chicken who sometimes tries to hide under Amaiya. However, Sumana is usually first one to the meal table! We both like to play in our play area, a long hall that includes boxes to jump in and a long paper tube to run through.
Dusty
September 2006
Hi! I'm Dusty and I'm around 14 years old. I came to the LCHS back in
March and was adopted about a month later. When I came in, I was
malnurished and neglected and had pulled out most of my fur. I lived
with a companion cat who was sick and had to be put to sleep. I was
also sick, but not as severely.
With the help of Barbara Hatch of the Leon County Humane Society and Dr.
Dawn Figlio of Paws and Claws, I was nursed back to health. Soon after, I was adopted and taken home.
I have a new brother that I have grown to like and my adoptive mom takes such good care of me. I
love to cuddle and purr, and I'm so glad that I have a nice home to
live in now. I have gained about 5 pounds since going to my new house
and all my fur has grown back in. I am also now totally healthy!
Leo
September 2006
Hi my name is Leo and I was adopted in August of 2004. I am having a great life in Tallahassee. I like to play a lot and I like tease my sister Samantha (she was adopted before me). This is just a quick note to say thanks to the Leon County Humane Society!! In this picture you can see me in 2004 and now (2006) with my afternoon nap partner, Fred. Want to join us?
Chloe
August 2006
Hi, my name is Chloe! These days I am a rambunctious 8 month-old puppy who loves meeting new people and getting my paws into everything imaginable. But life wasn’t always so exciting. When I was born, my seven brothers and sisters and I were left at the dump, with no way to fend for ourselves and little chance for survival. We couldn’t even open our eyes yet. Luckily, some nice people found us and rescued us. Most of my siblings went to other shelters, but my sister, Camille, and I were taken to the Leon County Humane Society. They saved our lives! They found us foster families who bottle fed us and took care of us until we were old enough to be adopted. I found my permanent home in April and haven’t stopped having fun since. I now have a new sister—a Siberian Husky named Allie. She’s the best! We have a great time running around together, playing and getting into trouble. I couldn’t be happier!
Bob and Bill
August 2006
Bob and Bill are two of three kittens of a feral mom. The third kitten and feral mom were killed, and Bob and Bill were trapped together at about six weeks of age. They were gradually tamed and are now living the high life in their new home!
Simon
August 2006
Simon was a stray that came up to a lady's house and ate out of her cats bowls. He's happily adopted now and learning (slowly) to co-habit with two dachshunds! Even though he's officially Simon, we call him "Mr. Mistoffolees" after the cat in the play "Cats."
Roadrunner
August 2006
Roadrunner, a small feral female kitten jumped off from under a truck at a stoplight. Roadrunner made a run for it and was hit by another car. A nice lady saw it all happen and jumped out of her car, grabbed Roadrunner and rushed her to Dr. Mountain. Unscathed except for road rash on 3 paws. Roadrunner went to her new foster home and ufortunately, one paw became abcessed a week later. Roadrunner was headed back to Dr. Mountain and stayed there 2 weeks. On weekends she stayed with LCHS Office Manager and Cat Foster, Barb Hatch for daily dressing changes on both front paws. Barb said Roadrunner looked like she had crab claws! She is back in her foster home - still quite shy, but purrs when held.Roadrunner's favorite treat - organically grown chicken from her "mom's" plate. Guess we can say she still has 7 lives left!
Edward
August 2006
Edward, a small black kitten was found near death on a sweltering day in the parking lot of A.G. Edwards (hence the name). A client went to move what he thought was a dead animal off of the pavement and discovered faint signs of life in the small kitten. He brought him inside, and one of the staff members (my broker's secretary) knew of my work. She sent the kitten immediately to us. I did a brief exam and realized the kitten was in dire need of help so took him directly to Dr. Figlio. Just like on TV - I put him in a carrier, told my co-workers "Call Paws and Claws and tell them I'm on the way with an emergency", and ran him to the car. We were rushed immediately to the treatment area and Dr. Figlio pounced on him and went to work, along with two people following her instructions for care. Indeed the kitten was near death - he was seizing - 30 minutes more and he would have been dead from starvation and dehydration. He had a lot to recover from, but did so 100%!. He turned out to be an extremely gentle and loving kitten, and has been adopted!
Karz
August 2006
Karz is a small kitten that rode down from Georgia under a car hood. He arrived a bit dehydrated but otherwise unscathed.
Taffy's Diary
August 2006
Dear Diary,
Well, I’m here in a cage again. The last people said I couldn’t live at their house anymore because I chased their chickens, but I didn’t know what they were. The shelter people say I can’t stay long because I’ve already had two chances to be adopted. That’s okay with me because what I really want is to live in a house with a family.
Dear Diary,
A nice lady just took me out of that cage and put me in her car. She tells me that we are going to a Leon County Humane Society Foster Home. She says that foster parents are nice people who let homeless pets like me stay with them in their home until we find a family of our own. I like the sound of that!
Dear Diary,
Sorry I haven’t written in a while. I have been so busy! I have a forever home now and a little girl to play with. Her name is Madeline. We snuggle, read books, go for walks and even play dress up sometimes. Today I’m wearing a pearl necklace and carrying a purse. Who knew that a “chicken-chaser” could be such a lady? My little girl says that I’m beautiful. I just know that I am very, very happy!
Maya - Roadside Recovery
August 2006
That’s me, Maya, when I was just a few days old. I couldn’t even see the hand that was holding me, because my eyes hadn’t opened yet. Someone found me by the side of a road and took me to a pizza place! Without my mom, I needed round-the-clock bottle-feeding. Lucky for me, I ended up in a Leon County Humane Society foster home. (That’s a little bit of my special milk on my chin.)
Look at me now! Haven’t I grown? I have a new home with a family of my very own! Don’t I look happy and healthy? The nice people at LCHS sure did take good care of me. And guess what? My new family took advantage of the “Multi Pet Discount” so I have an adopted kitty-sister to play with. I’m a lucky girl!
Motor Kitty
LCHS name: Ashley
August 2006
3 yrs ago today I adopted Ashley the kitty that I renamed "Motor Kitty" because her "motor" goes all the time! She licks our feet and legs and loves my other kitty who grooms her face. I tell Motor Kitty that if I had looked all over the world I could not have found a better cat. I tell all my friends to get pets from LCHS. Mary Ann Donald
Buddy
July 2006
It’s been just five months since we adopted Little Buddy from LCHS. Since we have always owned dogs, having a cat has been a totally new experience for us. (Notice I was careful to say have a cat and not own a cat.) It has amazed us how quickly Little Buddy took over our house, making it completely his own. We also now know about hairballs and nightly walks across us while sleeping. We also know that cats are truly lovable creatures and we are lucky to live in Little Buddy’s home………The Gregories
Logan
LCHS name: Cinco
July 2006
Logan is doing great-fitting right in with the family :)
Thanks for everything! Vanessa Zein-Eldin
Happy Ending for Three Kittens
Kendra Trainer and her trio of cats
June 2006
Imagine 50-60 cats, all living in a filthy, singlewide mobile home – It was a job too big for the north Florida cat rescue organization who got the call. So the Leon County Humane Society Foster and Adoption Program agreed to take in three of the most critically ill kittens. Even the veterinary staff had seldom seen animals in such bad shape – severely underweight, suffering from viral infections, internal and external parasites. Worst of all, two of the kittens had each lost an eye due to neglect and infection. It was a rough start to life. It took many medications and weeks of loving care from LCHS Cat Foster Coordinator Barb Hatch and Paws and Claws Veterinary Clinic, but now Tippy, Rosie, and Candy are healthy, happy, affectionate kittens. They were adopted by a couple who couldn’t bear to see them separated after surviving their ordeal together. They get to remain a trio for life.
Lethal Spurlin
May 2006
Hey! My name is Lethal Spurlin and my owner is Lisa Spurlin. She adopted me back in January of 1993 from the Leon County Humane Society. I was already 3-6 months old. I am not doing so good now, healthwise, but have been healthy and loved for fourteen years. My owner was a student at Florida State University when she adopted me. She loved me from the first time she saw me. We have had sooooo many adventures in fourteen years!!!! My owner says to tell you THANK YOU and I want to thank you, too. So, THANK YOU, from the bottom of our hearts.
Love, Lethal and Lisa Spurlin
Sweetie - Hurricane Katrina Survivor
September 2005
Sweetie was the first of many Hurricane Katrina victims to seek help from LCHS. Her owners, Louisiana evacuees, came to Tallahassee and stayed at a local hotel during the hurricane. Sadly, Hurricane Katrina destroyed everything they owned. Faced with the unknown they began preparing to return to Louisiana and tearfully decided, “We just can’t put Sweetie through this. It’s too hot and we have no idea where we’re going. Can you please find someone else to care for her?” 8 year old Sweetie was immediately placed in a foster home where she was showered with affection. Within a few days, a loving, permanent home was found. We kept our promise to her first family and her new owners are thrilled to have Sweetie as a part of their lives.
