Disaster Relief Efforts & Answers to Your Questions

So What's Going on With Us?

Thank you to all of the wonderful emergency fosters who took in pets for the storm!

LCHS is back and (mostly) operational! We have returned to normal business hours with little to no damage to the office. We got phone service back today and hope to have internet by the end of the week.

We have already reached out to counties across the panhandle, and started coordinating supply drops to affected areas that requested aid. Monday morning, we sent Marianna and Liberty County a large load of supplies each and we have regular supply runs scheduled for the rest of the week and beyond.

We will also be receiving animals from affected shelters across the panhandle for weeks to come. We have already taken in over two dozen pets with more on the way.

Donate Pet Food and Supplies

LCHS is currently a main staging organization in Tallahassee for pet food and supply donations headed for the affected areas. We will be accepting pet food donations for the next several weeks. This includes food/feed for cats, dogs, horses and other livestock, etc. We are also accepting gallon Ziploc bags to save the receiving locations the time-consuming task of rationing the food brought in. If you want to help with transport, we would welcome gas cards, but we are currently fully outfitted with delivery drivers.

Donations can be dropped off around the clock. If you bring supplies outside of our regular hours, please leave them on our covered front porch.

We will accept supplies for people as well, but we recommend taking your non-pet donations to one of the drop-off locations organized by Operation Florida Strong. The Tallahassee Democrat has also compiled a list of resources for those in need and more places to donate and/or volunteer. Additionally, a list of donation/distribution and staging sites is being compiled in this Google document.

Donate Toward the Care of Incoming Refugee Pets

As we continue to take in pets from nearby shelters and rescues left without buildings, power or resources after the storm, we need your help to provide for them. Many will enter our program in need of medical attention. If you are interested in helping with the cost of these pets' needs, please donate today.

Want to Get Hands On?

No problem! LCHS can use volunteers to help right here at the office and we are in desperate need of foster parents for both dogs/puppies and cats/kittens.

  • Yard Cleanup
    • Wednesday 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm
    • Experience with a chainsaw and/or the ability to provide a chainsaw would be great!
  • Foster Parents
    • With all of the new animals being brought to LCHS, we will continue to need help housing them. We are looking for fosters for incoming dogs and cats of all ages. If you are interested in becoming a foster, you can find the application here.
  • More to come!
    • We'll be posting more volunteer opportunities as they become needed throughout this week and beyond via social media and email.
October Dog Wash

The October Dog Wash will be rescheduled to a Saturday later this month or in early November when we have finished helping others (and ourselves) back on their paws. We will make an announcement via email and social media once the new date is set.

A Bittersweet Farewell to One of Our Own & Temporary Halt to Volunteer Enrollment

LCHS Relations Coordinator, Lauren Bacon's, fun-loving personality and contagious energy caused us to quickly find a friend in her. On a positive note for Lauren, but a sad one for LCHS, Lauren has accepted a promising job locally and she's left her staff role at LCHS. While you won't regularly see Lauren and her LCHS adoptee pup, Yoda, at the office, they've promised not to stay away for long. Please join us in wishing great things ahead for Lauren!

Due to the timing of Lauren's departure and current disaster response efforts, LCHS will be closing regular volunteer enrollment for the remainder of 2018 beginning on Monday, October 22nd. Recurring volunteer opportunities will continue as normal and new opportunities will be available to currently active volunteers and/or the public as needed. We simply won't be accepting new applications or holding orientations until after the New Year.
